Mark Peckmezian’s striking practice is rooted in irony, humour and an all-encompassing fascination with people. The Toronto-born photographer – who has a background in portraiture, and a wealth of experience in fashion – travels extensively and works intuitively, creating vibrant, idiosyncratic images of the characters he meets on the streets and elsewhere.
Authentic and easygoing in aesthetic and approach, his original point-of-view is underpinned by a rich photographic vocabulary. It’s a foundation that he has developed through years of research into the history of the medium. But through Peckmezian’s lens, established tropes and archetypes are reorientated; every nuance of expression, style and manner is made to feel resolutely fresh and forward-facing.
