Islands

Self published

Rhythmic and undulating, Mel Bles’ Islands brings together a series of photographs that traces the soulful connection between the body and nature. What began as a meditation on the image as a two-dimensional object has evolved into a powerful sequence of bodies and landscapes, bound by rich, inky lines.

Bles captures the softness and intimacy of the female form. Bodies are juxtaposed with natural landscapes, holding figure and place in careful tension without falling into traditional sexual or romantic tropes.

The making of the images is itself a study in texture and transformation. Some photographs appear in their purest form, while others move through stages of alteration: revisited, reprinted, rephotographed on an iPhone, scanned, upturned, or reframed. The result is a publication that treats each image as a miniature landscape in its own right, inviting close looking while building a resonant visual sequence across the book as a whole.
