Venetia Dearden’s images are carefully aimed to provoke a feeling, an experience. The honesty of her own response to the people and landscapes she encounters brings a strength and directness to her evocative photographs.

Venetia’s easy, open manner creates relationships in a matter of hours, or – as in her well-known personal projects – over several months or years. Her belief in the pivotal moment, in cherishing people, and in following her gut has taken her on a photographic journey from Peru to France and Africa (where she has worked for Médécins sans Frontières and Every Mother Counts), but always brings her back to the countryside of her childhood (Somerset Stories and Glastonbury: Another Stage). Venetia looks at her subjects in their contexts, asking us what it is to be human within our chosen environments. Her project Eight Days is a record of a spontaneous road trip taken with friends across the United States.

Excited by the possibilities of moving image, Venetia’s mature work brings a fine art sensibility to her early journalistic training, as she focuses on mood and aesthetic beauty.

Born in 1975 in Brecon, Wales, Venetia Dearden lives in Somerset and maintains a strong affinity with its landscape and people. Her photographs of local families living close to the land first brought her work to international attention in 2008, on publication of her book Somerset Stories, Fivepenny Dreams. Venetia has an MA in Anthropology, Comparative Religion and History of Art from Edinburgh University (1998) and undertook postgraduate studies in Photojournalism at the London College of Printing (1999–2000). In 2011 Venetia received the Vic Odden Award from the Royal Photographic Society. She is fluent in French and Spanish.

Venetia’s book projects are published by Kehrer Verlag. Glastonbury: Another Stage (2010) was accompanied by a solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London. In 2011 Venetia was commissioned to shoot Mulberry, a book celebrating the company’s 40th anniversary, building on a relationship of several years. Eight Days (2011) has toured internationally, from the Coldharbour Gallery, London (2011) to VII Gallery, New York (2012) and Noordelicht Photofestival, Netherlands (2012); it was selected for the book awards at Les Rencontres d’Arles, France, in 2012.
