In a review of his solo exhibition at Svetlana Gallery in 2018, published in Texte Zur Kunst, Ilya Lipkin’s work has been described as “suggesting an unfolding cultural situation – expressed in public and semi-public settings – rather than any vision of interiority, subjectivity, or particularised emotional experience. It is this disdain for the liberal documentary mode and its programmatic exposure, especially regarding otherness, which allows his images to evoke something already ‘there’: the foul banality of so-called advanced society, fanatically repressed in elite culture and politics.” Conceptually informed and multifaceted in his photographic approach, Lipkin’s practice purposefully eschews a singular methodology or photographic “style”, instead referring continually to the history of the medium and it’s deployment and circulation in mass media.

Born in 1982 in Riga, Latvia, Lipkin grew up in Queens, New York and currently resides between Berlin and NYC. Lipkin studied at the prestigious Whitney Independent Study Program, graduating in 2009. He has exhibited his work widely in venues such as the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwart, Autocenter Berlin, Silberkuppe, Emmanuel Layr Gallery, kim? Contemporary Art Center, as well as at the Liste Fair in Basel. His artwork is represented by Lars Friedrich Gallery in Berlin and Svetlana Gallery in NYC.
