Through hints of posture and composition, she teases out subtleties of personality that reveal authenticity in the moment and unite her fashion photography with portraiture. Her own career as a model has given her a fluency in fashion imagery and the confidence to follow her own vision. This combined with her unaffected warmth creates an indefinable and uncommon level of trust with her subjects. Annemarieke captures strength and vulnerability, in the fluidity of location shoots and private spaces.

Sophie veils portrait shots with foliage and the blur of glass, a glance rather than a stare, encouraging a range of personal interpretations. Developed in collaboration with an illustrator, a joint exhibition took place in Amsterdam in 2010.

Between Us announces her unique style – an ability to capture mood and personality, unafraid of faces in shadow or obscured meaning, in bold, graphic images. Annemarieke followed the modelling elite, documenting their private moments in Paris, London and New York. In 2011 Ivan Shaw, photography director at US Vogue, curated the resulting exhibition, having encouraged her initial shots for the project – ‘Between Us: A Model’s Life’ was shown during Fashion’s night out in the W Hotel in New York. Annemarieke van Drimmelen is an Amsterdam native, born to Dutch parents in Australia in 1978. A full-time photographer since 2005, she divides much of her time between London and New York.
